Today I attended a talk by a judge in the industrial court, with the topic of "Good conscience in legal practice".
I was surprised that when my boss asked me to attend the talk, as I am just a conveyancing clerk (and also a law student). It is because generally the chambering student, attachment student or junior lawyer is the one who suppose to go to the talk. Nevertheless I still appreciate it when the chance is given.
However, I was later on informed that only the members (ie lawyer) and pupils are qualified to attend the talk. At this juncture, my boss still encourage me to go, and even ask me to impersonate him!! I was like.. OK boss, your wish is my command.
I was the first one who entered the auditorium. It was 2.45pm. I was not suprise by that because most of the lawyers are busy with the workload and cases, and that is the reason why this kind of talks are generally less attended. I mean - who is going to give up their precious time to listen to nonsense!! (u will know it after u become a lawyer)
It is quite ironic when the speaker is late for the talk - especially the topic is about the good conscience of legal practice. However, throughout the talk I ended out really admire this speaker. He is humorous, which is quite conflicting to the public that the judge is normally someone who rarely smile or joke.
Even though the topic is about the good conscience, nevertheless the judge is not only concentrate on the topi , but also to express his personal views (not seditious nor defamatory), which makes me learned a lot about the practical things that happen in our judiciary.
I would end this article by saying that, it really inspires me and ignite my dream to study law. Law students should be given the chance to attend this kind of talks in order to open their mind.
